Greetings musical friends,
On behalf of the Second Chances Community Band Society of Nova Scotia, I would like to invite you and any of your musical colleagues to take part in our first Halifax Community Band Festival during the weekend of May 23rd- 25th, 2014 at St. Mary’s University.
The community band festivals in Nova Scotia are intended for amateur band musicians of all playing levels and always include a fantastic lineup of activities, clinics and amazing guest conductors/performers. The festivals are an opportunity for the many members of our Maritime musical family to come together, learn from each other’s experience, celebrate each other’s successes, build lasting friendships, and make memorable music together.
This year’s festival will include the conducting talents of Dr. Jason Caslor (Memorial University), Maggie Helms (Northeast Kings Education Centre), Dr. Gregory Irvine (University of Prince Edward Island) and Ron Murphy (Atlantic Festival of Music). There will be a number of talented instrumental clinicians running break-out sessions. Long & McQuade will be on hand with a few interesting products for purchase as well as a selection of new and used instruments for you to try. We will also be welcoming the Stadacona Band of the Royal Canadian Navy as guest performers for our participants.
The festival weekend traditionally ends with a public performance on the Sunday afternoon. This year’s concert has been donated to the YWCA of Halifax. All money raised through ticket sales will be used for the purchase of playground equipment for a local YWCA day care facility.
So far the Halifax Community Band Festival will include two levels of playing ensemble. A beginner ensemble, called the Ron MacKay band, will be for players in their first or second year of playing. (Who is Ron MacKay, you ask? Find out HERE.) An advanced ensemble, name TBA, will be for players with more than 2 years of playing experience. If the number of registrations warrant it, a third ensemble for intermediate level players may be added.
Registration fees for this year’s festival in Halifax are as follows: $85.00 for an Individual, $65.00 for an Additional Family Musician (please specify who), and $42.40 for any Full Time Students.
Payment options include an e-mail money transfer to our band e-mail: firstname.lastname@example.org or payment by a cheque payable to Second Chances Community Band NS and mailed to our band address: 108 Grindstone Drive, Halifax, Nova Scotia, B3R 0A6
If you are considering joining us and you are travelling to Halifax, St. Mary’s University is offering a great deal on accommodations for our participants.
